Padre Bay and its side canyons is the widest expanse of Lake Powell. Beneath the bayΓÇÖs waters, roughly in its center, lies the site where the padres, Dominguez and Escalante, crossed the Colorado in 1776. There are many fine campsites scattered throughout the bay, most on the west side of the canyons. Padre Canyon itself was the route Dominguez and Escalante descended to reach the river. It extends northward east of Gunsight Butte and is connected to Gunsight Bay by Gunsight Pass when the lake is at higher elevations.
Padres Butte, note the plural in this case, is now an island, but was a high point on the promontory extending north from Dominguez Butte between Face and Labyrinth canyons on the south side of the bay.
